Controlling the Narrative

Last week Elder Mark Bassett tragically passed away unexpectedly at age 59. He was serving as the executive director of the Missionary Department at the time of his passing.

Strangely, the cause of death published is that he “passed away from a traumatic brain injury,” and it’s mentioned he was with his family in St. George when the “incident” occurred.

If you do a Google search, even AI searches report the exact language above for the cause of the untimely death of Elder Bassett.

Most conscientious people would prefer a little more detail. Not because people want to violate privacy or add stress to the family, but because in our country, people generally value and expect the truth.

Was Elder Bassett hit by a car while crossing the street? Did he fall off of a roof? Was he bungee jumping or skydiving? None of this is meant in any way to be callous about this tragedy, but it is very odd that the narrative for how he died is being so tightly controlled.

Fox 13 actually called the St. George police department to ask for any details that might provide context for what took place. They were told by the police they could not and would not give any information.

Why so much secrecy? Why is every news article parroting the exact same response and providing no details? Usually when such a thing takes place, it’s because the truth may not be helpful in the protection of some other preferred narrative.

I did a little more digging and found this:

In this short video, this woman from the Mormonish Podcast says she learned that Elder Bassett was actually golfing with family members when he had some sort of cardiac incident that caused him to fall from his golf cart and strike his head.

Sorry if I’m missing something here, but why wouldn’t that be the narrative? I.e. the truth? That Elder Bassett had a heart attack or a stroke that led to his death? It’s like saying that the guy who died in a motorcycle accident had Covid at the time and so Covid is the cause of death… A story we heard more than once a few years ago.

Not many 59-year-olds, in seemingly great health, die from falling out of a golf cart.

Why did the Church (or someone with a lot of power) instruct the St. George police to not release any details? Is that ethical? Honest? Transparent?

Is it possible that Elder Bassett is just another casualty of the Covid Vax that the Brethren have insisted is safe and effective? That would certainly not be convenient or helpful to their current narrative.

And yet, thousands of young men and women still subject themselves to this untested and obviously unsafe vaccine in order to demonstrate their undying (pun) devotion to the Brethren.

If in fact, Elder Bassett died as a result of the clot shot, he can now be added to a growing list of innocent people whose greatest mistake may have actually been to follow the prophets, as it pertained to this issue.

How many more must die for the Church to come clean?

Another unexplained tragedy took place just in January of this year. Elder Caleb Martin, age 21, died in his sleep while serving a mission “from a medical cause that has not yet been determined.” The Church has offered zero details as to why a perfectly healthy young missionary died in his sleep.

My friend Jason Soulier died a couple of years ago while serving as a mission president. I speak about that here. He was only 54. No details have been given publicly for why he died in his sleep.

I express my sincerest condolences to the Bassett family as well as to the Martin family. You deserve answers, and the world deserves to hear their true stories so that others can be spared from the trauma you now experience.

I close in the words of President Oaks, which seems to be the rule the Church lives by:

“There is a temptation for the writer or the teacher of Church history to want to tell everything, whether it is worthy or faith-promoting or not. Some things that are true are not very useful.”

And I pose the question to the sincere reader: What else has the Church not been honest about while trying to control the narrative? The following video gives a long list of items worth becoming familiar with.
